What is search engine optimization?

The more you learn about SEO, the more traffic your websites will get from search engines. That is why it is to your benefit to learn all you can about it and use the techniques I will show you when you design your pages.

Obtaining exposure for your site through natural search engines listings will increase your credibility with visitors, provide brand recognition for your site, and build your traffic volume.

Search engine optimization, often referred to as SEO, is defined as the act of designing or altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines. These are the natural listings search engines generate without you having to pay anything for advertising.

The objective of Search Engine Optimization is to increase the number of visitors to your website by ranking very high in the results of searches for the most appropriate keywords describing the content of your site. This relative ranking is often viewed as a struggle or a contest to out-do your competition but its not as hard as some make it out to be.

If you search on your target keywords, you will see the leading site in the rankings. All you need to do is to be better than that website in the number one position. I will show you ways to optimize and improve search engine results with ranking and placement advice, information, hints, and tips to improve your search engine rankings.

We will be covering a lot of information about SEO but there are three simple principals that will be stressed throughout:

  1. Have unique content on your site that users will find valuable.
  2. Use relevant keywords throughout your webpage.
  3. Get other related sites to link to your site.

The Basics of SEO

  • Create a useful, content-rich site, and include keywords that clearly and accurately describe your content.
  • Try to use text instead of images to display important information and links. Crawlers don't recognize text contained in images.
  • Make a list of the words users would type to find your pages on a search engine. Make sure that your site actually includes those words within the text.
  • Avoid the use of dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character) whenever possible since not all search engine spiders crawl dynamic pages.
  • Make sure that your TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and accurate for the content of your webpage.
  • Make a site with a clear hierarchy where every page can be reachable from at least one text link.
  • Keep the text on each page to approx. 600-800 words.
