Drug Addiction Information & Resources

Addiction is one of the greatest problems that our modern society is facing.  Addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a substance.

The term 'addiction' has been partially replaced by the word 'dependence' for substance abuse. Addiction has been extended, however, to include mood-altering behaviors or activities. There is a growing recognition that many addicts, such as polydrug abusers, are addicted to more than one substance.

So how did you or your loved one become addicted? In certain areas of the brain, dopamine is released and this gives one the feeling of pleasure or satisfaction. This process is over-stimulated by many drugs that are abused by addicts.

These strong feelings of satisfaction that drugs can provide become desired and craved. To satisfy this desire one will repeat behaviors that cause the release of dopamine, even if the drugs that they are taking start to effect their relationships, their career and/or their health.

Often these behaviors result in addiction and that addiction can have negative effects on a person's well-being.

To research the drugs you or your loved one is addicted to, select the name of the drug from the menu on the left.
